Words are powerful and can evoke strong feelings – happy, sad and everything in between. If a particular word or phrase causes you to feel uncomfortable, then maybe you can substitute it with another word whenever you read or hear it. This will make it feel more neutral.
For example, when I started on my spiritual journey, the word “God” used to make it difficult for me to read various books. Why was that? At that point, the word “God” meant some vengeful, old man in the clouds who became angry with people, judged them, sent them to heaven or hell etc. and so the meaning I attached to that word meant that it didn’t align with my view of the Universe as an all encompassing, loving being.
What I did was to substitute the word “Universe” for the word “God” whenever I read it. That made a lot more sense to me when reading spiritual books. And the funny thing is, over time, my meaning for the word “God” changed totally so that now when I read it, it means a loving being and gone is the vengeful old man in the sky that I used to think of!
That’s interesting because it means you can change the meaning you attach to words and maybe even events that have happened to you. So if a word has negative connotations for you, know that you have the ability to change it to something you are comfortable with.
You don’t have to attach a certain meaning to a word just because that’s how you were brought up. You can decide right now that the meaning is going to change to something that resonates well with you!
