Steps for Forgiving Yourself and Others

In the previous blog, I wrote about why forgiveness is a healing process. In this blog, you’ll discover the various actions you can take to start the forgiveness process.

The situations which need forgiveness may cause you to feel intense energies such as anger, guilt and shame. These become stuck energies around you.

See forgiveness as the sun cleansing you.

The more you think about them, the more energy you give them and so they become deep rooted like strong ivy clinging to a wall. Just like removing that ivy, it takes commitment and time to remove those energies through forgiveness.

This is why forgiveness is a gradual process that usually requires both self-reflection and deliberate actions. Below are some strategies that can help in forgiving others and yourself:

  • The first thing to do is to reflect on the situation that requires your forgiveness, or self-forgiveness. Recognise and validate your feelings of hurt, anger or guilt without judgement. It’s OK to feel those emotions.

Journal your thoughts and feelings to gain clarity on the impact of the hurt and how you can start to let it go.

The feelings will come up. Cry and rage, let the emotions out – that’s a way for the stuck energy to start to be removed.

  • This can be difficult and painful so see a counsellor, therapist or speak with a friend. They can give you the support and strength you need to navigate the forgiveness process.

Sometimes an objective viewpoint can help you understand the context and underlying reasons behind actions—whether your own or someone else’s. This can allow you to maybe have empathy or compassion about the actions. With self-forgiveness, this allows you to be gentle on yourself

Remember, forgiveness doesn’t mean condoning harmful behaviour; it’s about releasing the burden of resentment.

  • Forgiveness is an act which many of us find difficult. So think of a ceremony or ritual you can perform to forgive someone or yourself. Maybe write a letter (even if you don’t send it) detailing the situation, the emotions, the repercussions and how you are now ready to forgive and move on from it.

Think about what other symbolic acts like this could help you in the process of forgiveness.

  • Since these are energies stuck to your energy fields, you can use meditation to remove them. In meditation, visualise/feel these energies floating away and being replaced by the energy and light of peace or whatever feels right to you.

Repeat to yourself “I now forgive {person’s name}/myself for….” and see the energy of the situation, the feelings caused dissolving away. Replace that energy with sparkling, silver light, or ask for it to be replaced by Divine love and light. As ever, do what feels right for you.

You can visualise a sword cutting through energy cords between you and the person/people/situation involved and breath it out. Send love and compassion to the aspect of you that wants to cling on to the anger, resentment, shame, etc.

Do this sort of meditation a few times until you feel a change or shift within you when you think about the situation

Thick ivy on a wall can creep over windows stopping the light getting inside. It’s the same with your energy fields and the experiences you’ve had which require forgiveness.

Why live in darkness all the time? Does it serve you or the memory of the people involved?

Give yourself permission and allow yourself the Grace to know that you have the right to clear your energy fields and let the light and peace back in.

And so it is.
