Did you set any New Year resolutions and if so, how are they going? You may still have enthusiasm at the moment but is there a part of you that’s wondering if you can manage to sustain them? So many people join a gym in January but by the end of January, most of them have stopped coming regularly!
There’s something about the beginning of a New Year where we feel as if we can achieve anything – it’s a new start, a blank page etc. and this time we are going to do it!
But as the weeks go by, that burst of enthusiasm is harder to sustain. So what can you do about maintaining that “can do” attitude for the goals you want to achieve?
There is an alternative way to view your goals. Focus on “why” your heart is set on this goal. The “why” is your reason for making the effort to even set this goal so it can give you the impetus to keep moving forward.
If you’re wanting to lose weight and get fit, then focus on the “why” and not on the fact that you’re tired and have no incentive to exercise. Focus on the end result of the goal because that is where the “why” is leading you.
Is it because there’s some event in the future and you want to look great, or you want more energy to play with your kids/grandkids? These are the reasons and incentives which will overcome that unwillingness to exercise or take an action related to your goal.
If you’re aiming to further your career, think about the “why” – what will it allow you to experience? Do you want a job that will allow you to travel because you’d love to see more of the world. Or do you relish the idea of heading up a large team? Don’t just focus on the salary but more on “why” have you chosen this goal.
Goals are great but sometimes it’s difficult to sustain the energy needed to achieve them. Ask yourself as well, is this something you really want or are you only doing it because your family, friends, society think you should?
Place your awareness on your heart and ask yourself if this goal is something you really want to achieve, or are you only doing it to please someone else.
If it’s something you really want, then write down “why” you’ve chosen this goal. This is connected to the experiences that goal will allow you to have. Vishen Lakihani speaks more about this in his book “The Code of the Extraordinary Mind”.
Try to add in a creative visualization meditation where you imagine and feel having achieved the goal and how brilliant it is living those experiences. This can give you the extra fuel to keep going with your New Year resolution.
Don’t give up on your goals and dreams but maybe reframe the way you look at them by focusing on “why” you want to accomplish this goal. What will it add to your life?
Dwell on this and you may just find that extra impetus from within to carry on and achieve what you desire.
