Many people think that fulfilment comes from outside – the latest fashionable clothes, the newest car, accessories etc. You may say, “If I have that, then I’m fulfilled and life is good”. And that may true for a while, but inevitably you’ll start to think about what to buy next to feel fulfilled.
It’s like trying to keep up with the Joneses – an unending game of buying material goods which can still lead to a feeling of emptiness inside. You could have all the cars, clothes, gadgets in the world and you’d still be wanting more.
True fulfilment comes from inside, from self-worth and valuing yourself for who you are. Instead of judging yourself by how many qualifications you have, how much you earn, what you possess, start to look at what you have in your life and be grateful for that.
Be grateful for your home, your family and loved ones, the things you possess right now. Look at what you’ve already accomplished in your life. The more you focus on what you have achieved already, the more you’ll feel fulfilled.
The last year with Covid and lockdown has taught many of us to look within. We’ve seen that helping others in our community, making sure our family/friends are safe and healthy are what really matter. Possessions are nice, and always buy something that makes you feel happy but don’t rely on that to make you feel fulfiled in the long-term.
As you practise gratitude, self-development, helping/caring for others, your sense of worth increases. Feel good about yourself and don’t let that be determined by your possessions or what others say about you. Then like a rock, nothing can shake the fact inside you, that you value yourself at all times. And from that springs the beautiful sense of inner fulfilment.
