You may have heard of healing your inner child but what exactly does that mean? What is your inner child? For this blog, your inner child is the aspect of you which went through difficult times or hardships, such as feeling abandoned or unworthy.

Heal Your Inner Child
These create an emotional imprint which stay with you into adulthood unless they are addressed. They can show up in your life as issues with money, relationships or having confidence.
Multiple things can affect you as you grow up, e.g.
- Feeling scared or abandoned at around age 5.
- Feeling rejected or not good enough at age 10.
- Feeling misunderstood or hurt as a teenager.
When we’re young, we don’t have the tools to deal with such emotions and so we may bury them deep inside.
It’s like a snapshot is taken of you at the time and it stays within you. That child is there inside you still feeling abandoned or scared.
As an adult, situations may trigger you and that inner child aspect comes up in various ways, such as:
- Maybe you find yourself being abandoned by your partners or friends in adulthood – a very young, vulnerable part may come up.
- Being criticised by someone – a slightly older, defensive part may react
- You could feel rejected or misunderstood by someone – a teenage version may surface
In each situation, you need to work with that aspect of your inner child and heal it.
Most of the time, as with any child, that aspect wants to feel loved, understood, safe and so on. As an adult, you have the capability to give that to your inner child.
You can do the following exercise to tap into your inner child when something triggers you:
Ask yourself:
- How old do I feel right now? – Bring an image into your mind of that age.
- What does this remind me of? What happened to make you feel like that?
- Notice these things without judgement.
- You can then say to that aspect of you
- “I’m here for you now”
- “You’re safe with me”
That aspect is wanting protection and safety. Hug them if it feels right, send them love and acceptance.
As you start working with these aspects of you, you’ll find you start to handle situations differently.
Say the aspect that felt rejected, is now feeling loved, accepted, safe and protected. Since it is now loved, you’ll handle differently any future situations of rejection.
In some ways, no one can reject you again because that aspect of you is now always safe and loved.
This is why healing your wounded inner child helps you to handle situations better as an adult. You could go through life blaming the people who put you through those things but instead, why not take charge and heal those aspects yourself? You’ll then have total control of how you think, feel, act and react to events in a positive way.
If doing that exercise brings up tears or sadness, see a trained person to help you though it. There are many practitioners who specialise in inner child work.
The next blog will give you practical steps on how to start connecting with your inner child to create a wonderful relationship with it.
With love and light on your journey,
