In the previous blog, you saw how your inner child is formed through the experiences you have in life growing up and how they can affect you as an adult.
This blog will give you practical guidance on how you can create a nurturing relationship with your inner child. This will help you handle situations better which may have triggered hurtful reactions before.

Nurture Your Inner Child
Do these exercises once a week, or however many times you need, until you sense within you that your inner child is feeling safe and loved.
Exercise 1 – Inner Child Visualisation
In this exercise, you’ll connect with your inner child and give them the nurturing they need.
- Imagine yourself as a child. How was childhood overall or visualise a specific situation you want to heal.
- Notice how they feel – abandoned, rejected, hurt?
- Ask them what they need – safety, compassion, love?
You can respond as an adult to your inner child by saying:
- “I’m here for you now”
- “You’re safe with me”
- “I love you”
- Hold them or hug them if it feels right.
- Then imagine a golden light surrounding you both
- Feel healing energy from this light flowing into your inner child and the adult you. Let it dissolve the feelings of rejection, hurt and so on.
As you offer your inner child reassurance and love, this has a ripple effect through the whole of your being. As you love your inner child, so you start to accept yourself more right now.
Exercise 2 – Bring Back Joy and Playfulness
As children, we love to play and have fun. So connect to your inner child by doing the things you used to love to do when you were young such as :
- Drawing, colouring
- Dancing
- Being in nature
- Playing sport
- Anything else you loved to do
Find some time to do these things. It doesn’t have to be every day, just once in a while if that’s all you can manage. Reclaim the joy of being a child.
Exercise 3 – Letter to your Inner Child
If you like journaling, then why not write a letter to your inner child? This will help with emotional release and create a deeper connection between you.
You can start the letter with “Dear younger me…”. You can include the following as you give your inner child space to be seen and heard:
- Validation (“I’m sorry you felt…”)
- Reassurance (“It wasn’t your fault…”)
- Love (“I’m here for you now…”)
Each exercise is designed to bring to your awareness how your inner child feels and how to help it feel worthy and loved. The feelings you give to your inner child will be felt at the adult level.
Over time, you’ll handle differently situations which triggered you before. You may even find that those situations no longer arise because you have healed that part of you.
You can also use affirmations which you say each day such as :
- I honour and listen to my inner child.
- I am safe, supported, and cared for.
- My past does not define my future.
- I allow myself to feel joy and playfulness.
Check in regularly with your inner child because present events may still affect them. If you find these exercises bring up strong emotions, then see a specialist who is trained in inner child work or a therapist.
Healing your inner child will help you in the long run as an adult. You’ll have the inner strength to handle situations which before may have left you upset and overwhelmed.
With love and light on your journey,
